What’s in my suitcase!
Traveling through Europe in the winter is a dream come true. The cozy charm of France, coupled with the enchanting landscapes of Ireland, is going to make my journey-unforgettable. However, packing for a three-month winter adventure in Europe has been a challenge. My family is moving to France in January as we say goodbye to California. I had to get very strategic with my suitcase. So I thought why not share everything in this blog post. I will explore the art of packing, using packing cubes and creating the perfect capsule wardrobe for my three-month winter trip.
My motto: “one item for your back, one with wheels and one for your shoulder”
Research and Climate Considerations
Before you start packing, research the climate and weather conditions, I will be in both Ireland and France during the winter. Ireland tends to be milder but wetter, while France can experience more pronounced and colder temperature variations. Knowing the weather patterns will guide your packing choices.
Packing Essentials
To ensure you're adequately prepared for your three-month European winter adventure, let's begin with a list of the essentials:

Travel Accessories:
Packing Cubes: These are essential for efficient organization in your suitcase and backpack.
Power Adapter: A universal adapter to keep your devices charged.
Toiletries: Travel-sized toiletries, medications, and a basic first-aid kit. Becuase of how long I am traveling it does not make sense to pack travel size. I will buy everything when I arrive.
Documents: Passport, visa, photocopies, and travel insurance.
Maximizing Space with Packing Cubes
Packing cubes are a traveler's best friend, especially when you're on an extended winter journey. Here's how to use them effectively:
Categorize Your Items: Use different packing cubes for various categories such as clothing, accessories, toiletries, and electronics.
Roll Your Clothes: Rolling your clothing items not only saves space but also minimizes wrinkles.
Compress with Cubes: Compression packing cubes are particularly useful for bulky winter items like sweaters and coats.
Prioritize Access: Keep frequently used items in easily accessible cubes.
Utilize Empty Spaces: Fill gaps in your suitcase with smaller packing cubes.
Clothing:
Thermal Base Layers: Start with a few sets of thermal underwear to keep you warm.
Outerwear: A waterproof and insulated winter coat is indispensable. Consider a versatile color for a classic look in both countries I picked olive green.
Layered Clothing: Pack sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, and turtlenecks for layering. I picked a lot of affordable cashmere sweaters because they keep you very warm.
Bottoms: Include warm, versatile pants and jeans.
Footwear: High-quality waterproof winter boots are essential, as well as comfortable walking shoes.
Accessories: Bring a hat, gloves, a scarf, and thermal socks.

Building a Capsule Wardrobe
Creating a capsule wardrobe for your winter journey will ensure that you have a versatile and stylish collection of clothing that doesn't take up too much space.
For Ireland and France, consider the following capsule wardrobe items:
A Classic Coat: Choose a high-quality, versatile coat that works in both countries.
Sweaters: A selection of neutral-colored sweaters can be mixed and matched.
Shirts: Long-sleeve shirts and turtlenecks are perfect for layering.
Bottoms: A couple of pairs of well-fitting pants or jeans.
Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes and high-quality winter boots.
Accessories: A cozy scarf, hat, gloves, and thermal socks.
With these tips, you can enjoy the charm of both countries without the hassle of overpacking. Bon voyage and Slán go fóill!
